love letters to life

A blogger I read and really enjoy does this thing called "Friday Favorites," where she celebrates the highlights of each week in picture form with a few quick words on why those events/things are highlights for her. I love that concept - the whole reason I started writing this blog in the first place was to remember the quotidian little things that make my series of days so special. So, here we go: I'm going to try to write little Friday love letters to the world, and see if it sticks...part of my overall effort to practice gratitude and positivity as frequently and intentionally as possible.

Today, I'm feeling really good about life in general. Fresh off a totally soul-affirming weekend home full of my favorite people and places, I kind of want to kick ass and celebrate how awesome things have been for me in the last few months. There are a lot of thoughts and more articulate, carefully-considered words on that subject percolating in the back of my mind currently, but for now, here are a few things that I think totally deserve all the heart-eyes emojis:

- In the name of a responsible California budget (or, more realistically, more room in the "wine clubs" line on the budget!), I've stopped getting manicures. Instead, I'm a new devotee of Essie's Gel Couture at-home kits, which are actually really great and last close to a week on me. That's really saying something, given my brutal habit of picking my cuticles, biting my nails, and generally treating my hands terribly. I'm coupling the polish with Sally Hansen's miracle cuticle remover and a lot of stolen hotel lotion (currently really into Essentiel Elements Fresh Neroli, from the Palmer House!).

- Talking, as always, about books: I have a Redwood City library card! I haven't had a library card that I actually used since high school, and I'm bound and determined to stop impulse-buying books on sale and start checking them out like a good little girl (once the empty bookshelf is refilled, that is). Dave is also a reader, in his "ample" free time (HA!), and he happened to be reading a book that I found for a steal on Amazon. So I read it concurrently with him, and we discussed it a little bit on and off, along with our ideas of what makes literature great. It was a fantastically satisfying experience...sharing my love of literature with people I love is one of my favorite activities.

- Before I went home last week, I was surprised by the sweetest "just because" card from my mama bear. She does things like this all the time - little notes and Hershey kisses in our school lunchboxes, care packages during college finals, and of course the requisite "feel better gifts" on the worst of days - and I have always loved how cared-for and cherished it makes me feel, even to this day!

- The day before my beloved mama bear left California after our epic June road trip, she bought me a darling going-away gift from Anthropologie's Terrain store...a trio of pretty potted succulents that I promptly, and appropriately, named Mark Succerberg. LAUGH WITH ME AT MY RIDICULOUS PUNS, please. Anyway, Mark bloomed last week! And I didn't even know that was something a succulent could do! But I love looking at how much he's grown since his tiny baby days of my first weeks in Cali. I get really weirdly attached to plants that can survive me for longer than a season...before I moved, I had a baby Norfolk Island Pine that I bought in 2014, and it was actually really sad to leave it behind (Jodes adopted him!). Having little Mark, who is virtually indestructible, is the cutest reminder of my mama.

- And finally, check out this sunset, from a reading/journaling session on our deck last week. I don't think that palm tree view is ever going to get old for me.

Happy Friday, campers! Enjoy the long weekend!

Inventory: July 2017

As of 8pm last night...hiiiii, guys, did you miss me?!

Making: time to write - finally - after several weeks of choosing to pursue other things instead (oops).

Cooking: a giant batch of shredded pesto chicken from this recipe, which I can't wait to use to throw together a perfect Caprese...on Wednesday, once the madness of work and classes slows down for the week.

Drinking: the last of today's 100 oz of water, out of a Notre Dame Band pint glass, naturally.

Reading: Aziz Ansari's "Modern Romance" (which I borrowed from Dave, and can't stop laughing at), Marina Keegan's "The Opposite of Loneliness," and "Riches, Rivals and Radicals: 100 Years of Museums in America" (for my museum class!). Also just finished "Commonwealth" by Ann Patchett and it is remarkable.

Wanting: tickets to Joshua Henry's revue in downtown San Francisco next Monday night. Alas, class!

Looking: at the palm trees outside my bedroom window and still marveling over the fact that I live here.

Playing: with the New York Times crossword puzzle app, daily (Dave and I are addicted).

Listening: to La Cenerentola in advance of the Merola Program's performance on August 5th!

Wishing: that this past weekend's Schwegfam reunion here could have lasted like...five more weekends in a row. Too much fun, campers.

Enjoying: Laura's shared affinity for candles (you should see how many we've got hoarded in our extremely girly apartment, oh dear).

Waiting: for next month's trip home and October's NYC trip to see "Dear Evan Hansen" and "Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812!"

Liking: HAIM's new album, quite a lot.

Wondering: what area to explore this weekend. I'm leaning toward the Presidio...

Hoping: that tonight's opera class midterm went as well as I thought it did.

Marveling: at NorCal sunsets. Can you get over that sky up top?!

Needing: to find the perfect blackout drapes and hang my double curtain rod (can't wait for better sleep in a pitch-black room!).

Smelling: my bedside Lilac Blossoms candle, which is olfactory crack in its best, most deliciously floral form.

Wearing: this nightshirt from J.Crew, which I had monogrammed (because, duh, I've never met a monogram I didn't loooove.).

Following: a handful of awesome new literature-centric Instagram accounts (Reese Witherspoon Book Club, Hot Dudes Reading, Books and Abe, The Shelf, and Subway Book Review).

Noticing: how heavenly-cool it gets here after dark. I'm coming to love sleeping with my window open.

Knowing: that I really should set my alarm for ten minutes earlier tomorrow morning. Also knowing that, realistically, I'm not going to do that.

Thinking: about my own mortality, but not in a morbid way, in a healthy way that's largely inspired by recent reading material and class discussions and my conversation about goals(z) with my boss earlier.

Bookmarking: options for wall-hanging wine racks for our kitchen - the "join four wine clubs in a month" choice might've been a tiiiiiny bit excessive.

Giggling: over this hilarious analysis of which past American president would win in a mass knife fight - a longer read, but it's hilarious and well worth it!

Feeling: pretty damn good about things.

Inventory: (wishfully early) Spring 2017

Making: endless lists...logistics, meal planning, future dreams, and spring clothing.

Cooking: tonight, this chicken and autumn vegetable sheet pan bake. Hopping back on the Whole30 train (mostly) after a weekend of debauchery and ALL THE CHAMPAGNE.

Drinking: vanilla almond "Get Clean" tea from the Republic of Tea. Obsessed.

Reading: “Catcher in the Rye," finally!

Wanting: movement on certain fronts that are stalling out kind of frustratingly.

Looking: for opportunities around every corner.

Playing: "Dear Evan Hansen," the "La La Land" instrumental soundtrack, and Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony interchangeably all the time.

Listening: See above.

Wishing: that moving wasn't such a drag (our lease is up 5/31 and I'm already dreading it!).

Enjoying: weekly lake walks and brewery dates with Kelsie.

Waiting: for April the Giraffe to have her baby (omg I'm so embarrassed that I got sucked into this circus).

Liking: the week I have shaping up - two Guthries, a concert, and the opera!

Wondering: when the heck I'm going to, you know, sleep this week.

Hoping: for lots and lots of good news, and that the gym isn't crowded at lunch.

Marveling: at the springlike forecast we've got coming in Minneapolis, awww yissss.

Needing: to not eat the whole box of Thin Mints I bought yesterday in one sitting...wish me luck!

Smelling: the lovely odor of heavy-duty Eucerin hand cream, delish.

Wearing: the world's most perfect $25 black ankle pants (thanks Old Navy!)

Following: Gavin Kaysen's new restaurant, Bellecour, on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter - so excited for our 3/31 and 4/29 reservations!

Noticing: how much bigger an iPhone 7 is than a 5s and struggling with that adjustment (new phone, finally, hooray!).

Knowing: how lucky we are to be alive right now (SHAMELESS HAMILTON REFERENCE).

Thinking: about the future ooh OOOH.

Bookmarking: flights to the West Coast in June (so excited for Theresa's wedding!).

Giggling: at Emily's Napa photos, which she finally shared yesterday.

Feeling: incredibly excited and optimistic and hopeful, and that's just lovely :)

a facetious 2016 Christmas list from yours truly

...in order from most realistic to most "in your freaking dreams you crazy person."

1. this timeless and appropriate "Brunch Squad" sweatshirt, which I actually just ordered for myself from Old Navy...a steal at $25.

2. Drinking implements for festive events: for example, the "Chambong," which is LITERALLY A CHAMPAGNE BONG...or for those of us who can't get through a holiday sober (which is apparently the Schwegfam's M.O.), the "Santa's Flask" wine stocking

3. As my current iPhone 5 is missing texts on the regular and never seems to have enough storage, I'd like an upgrade to an iPhone 7, preferably accompanied by this glitter-filled, totally ridiculous Kate Spade case

4. Tickets to the Metropolitan Opera's 50th anniversary gala in New York next May...featuring pretty much every major star currently singing in the opera world. While not necessarily realistic, it's not totally out of the question with seats going for around $200 on Seat Geek...

5. While we're at it, let's take advantage of all the Trumpies "boycotting" "Hamilton" and snap up some fantastic seats to see it on Broadway, a steal of a deal starting at $500 (plus a non-essential organ, your first-born child and your soul).

6. Since it's already basically our Cheers, where everybody knows your name, I'd like a regular Friday night reservation at Spoon and Stable, preferably at the chef's counter so I can actually become best friends with Gavin Kaysen and learn the secret of their divine pumpkin ravioli and flawless tamarind pork chop.

7. I'm actually going to write Santa a letter to ask for this one, the item that I think should be topping every Irish fan's Christmas list this year: I'd like Brian Kelly fired, please, and (in my perfect fantasy Christmas world) replaced with Urban Meyer, who (duh) should be all about leaving Ohio State to come coach Notre Dame. In my perfect fantasy Christmas world.

8. While we're discussing totally realistic things Lizzie should have, let's throw a goldendoodle puppy on the list. It can be best friends with Molly and I will die and go to cuteness heaven on a daily basis.

9. Since clearly I'm going to receive all of this and absolutely 0% of this list is rooted in fantasy or pipe dreams, I might as well go all-out and ask for the real cuddly life partner I'm wishing for: Prince Harry. He's already proven he's got a thing for brunette Americans with the whole Meghan Markle thing...but I think Kate and I would get along so much better. Plus, I bet he could get me "Hamilton" Broadway tickets...Harry, baby, call me.

10. And to round out the list of everything I need in life to make me happy: a champagne button, and preferably an accompanying butler to deliver said champagne. It's already a thing at London's Bob Bob Ricard, and I think it definitely needs to cross the pond in time for 2017 and the impending Trump presidency/lunacy. Why don't we make it a two-for-one, actually, and just get me Prince Harry to deliver champagne at the press of my champagne button?

Alright campers, get cracking! I'm sure if all of you pool your resources you can pull this off in time for 12/25. In the meantime, I'll be hanging out at my place in my brunch sweatshirt, drinking wine out of a plastic Christmas stocking...cheers!

*All commentary in this post is, duh, no shit, facetious and 100% intended to amuse rather than to represent my actual Christmas list, you sillies.*

Inventory: November 2016

Making: lists, plans, and also a second cup of coffee.

Cooking: this recipe for crockpot caramelized onions, soon to be crockpot French onion soup, and the whole apartment smells amazing as a result.

Reading: Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton biography, along with “Gone with the Wind” for the umpteenth time, Joseph Kanon’s “Leaving Berlin,” and Noah Charney’s “The Art Thief.” I need to just commit to one and chill out – but I have a different book on every device plus a couple actual books going at all times.

Wanting: the Hamilton Mixtape omg omg (pre-order already in, naturally, and I've already listened to the two pre-release tracks three times each).

Looking: for a scarf and mittens that will match my new green J.Crew Chateau parka, squeeee!

Playing: a lot of trivia lately with the boys – we utterly dominated at Inbound BrewCo on Monday!

Listening: and rapping along with “Hamilton,” which is a daily occurrence around these parts.

Wishing: as always, for more hours in the day.

Enjoying: working from home…for the third Friday in a row, tee-hee!

Waiting: for tonight's champagne-and-orchestra fun with Jodester!

Liking: that this weekend is fall-back weekend aka I might actually catch up on some of my absurd sleep deficit.

Wondering: what dessert to make for Tuesday’s Friendsgiving/election results party.

Hoping: that the Irish pull out a win tomorrow at Navy...yikes.

Marveling: at this truly absurd November weather - hello, 65 degrees, it's nice to still see you around here.

Needing: to figure out what to wear to the orchestra tonight.

Smelling: the aforementioned French onion action, and this Target candle which I adore beyond measure.

Wearing: the coziest gray gingham flannel old-man jammies...the kind with the button-up top and everything.

Following: Meghan Markle on Instagram hoping to find out if she is actually dating my future husband Prince Harry, that beeyotch.

Noticing: that I reallllly need to vacuum the apartment, as there is polar bear rug EVERYWHERE.

Knowing: that I won't actually vacuum the apartment and will instead just pick up the tufts of polar bear rug by hand, alas.

Thinking: about the logistics and timing of voting on Tuesday for the most efficient in-and-out possible.

Bookmarking: Sonoma, CA champagne tours for our wine country Christmas!

Giggling: at mock-ups for the Schwegfam Christmas card of 2016, which, if I may say so myself, is going to be BRILLIANT.

Feeling: flipping Friday fantastic, friends! (also, apparently, alliterative) (that was unintentional)
