A surprise gift and a beauty review!

The other day, shortly after our return from Andrew and Alyssa's wedding, I went down to check my mail and found a surprise waiting for me, courtesy of Target!

Courtney is a business analyst in Target's beauty department...talk about a fun job! She was sweet enough to send along a sneak peek at Target's new Beauty Box for me to take a look at. Beauty sample kits like Ipsy, Birchbox, et cetera have swept the Internet and makeup drawers of women all over the country lately, but I'm super excited that Target's getting into the game. Here's a look at what I received:

First, the box includes a 20% off credit to dermstore.com, a new-to-me site that specializes in skin and haircare products. Even in the 20 minutes I spent poking around the site, I found dozens of items I'd love to try...but I was most excited to see they carry Clarisonic products! I'll be using my credit to stock up on brush heads.

I've always been a one-brand woman when it comes to makeup. Clinique was my first makeup (to cover terrible teenage acne, ugh), and I've remained loyal to their products for twelve years now. Given that fact, I was apprehensive about the LaNeige BB Cream...even more so because of its unique cushion format. In my experience, BB creams come in tubes...right? Imagine my pleasant surprise when I totally fell in love. The kit comes with a hypoallergenic application puff, and three different shades of the cream to try on a saturated sponge. You simply press the puff into the sponge for just the right amount of product, pat and blend it into skin, and voila!

Flawless. I still battle skin issues on and off, so seeing this porcelain-pretty finish made me incredibly happy...especially the light coverage that allowed the last of my summer freckles to shine through. (Pardon the excessive close-up of my face. Take it from me: this picture would not see the light of day it if weren't for the fact that my skin NEVER looks this good.)

The LaNeige is officially a "will buy in full size" product for me. Next up, I received a Jumbo Eye Pencil from NYX:

I have to admit, on first look, I was a little baffled by this one. Who wears white eyeliner? I'm terrible at eye makeup in general (I have really deep-set eyes), and the width/heft of the pencil, combined with the stark whiteness, really threw me. So I did what any makeup idiot would do and turned to Le Google. Who knew there were so many ways to use white liner? While some of the looks I found in tutorials veered distinctly space-agey or snow queen, I did learn a few super-helpful tips to brighten and widen eyes. First, inner corners of the eyes can be illuminated instantly with white liner smudged in. It makes small/almond-shaped eyes (UM, ME) appear bigger if used to line the waterline, the inner eye visible above the bottom lash line. It can also be used as a brow highlighter. I messed around a lot with the tips I found and had fun figuring out ways I can use this guy from day to day!

I also received a pretty L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Extraordinaire lip gloss in "Nude Ballet." I'm terrible with lip glosses because they usually feel sticky and gloopy on my mouth. This one, however, glided on without globbing up, stayed put through a few glasses of wine with minimal smear-age, and looked subtle enough for work...good trifecta!

That's the finished face...not too shabby for a makeup noob whose usual M.O. is concealer and a swipe of mascara, eh?!

Onto hair: as we all know, I have ridiculously curly, unmanageable hair on a regular basis. It's the bane of my existence. I really struggle with blowouts and heat-styling because it lasts such a short time on me before frizzing out and being generally terrible. The Beauty Box contained two sample-size hair products: the famous L'Oreal Elnett hairspray, and a Frederic Fekkai dry shampoo/"blowout reviver."

I gave myself a "blowout" (aka tortured my hair with a paddle brush, blowdryer, and big-barreled curling iron) on Thursday when I received the Beauty Box, and headed down to my parents' place on Friday afternoon, where I snapped a few selfies of the finished product around 24 hours later. LOOK! IT'S A MIRACLE!

This might really truly be the best my hair has ever looked, ever. Unfortunately, being me, I whipped it up in a ponytail the next day to go hiking and then ended up washing away the really, really ridiculously good hair before giving the Fekkai dry shampoo another day to work its magic. That said, I'm probably buying the full-size on my next Target run because who doesn't love day-after-blowout hair that looks amazing?!

Thanks to Courtney and Target for sharing the Beauty Box with me--I loved an excuse to mess around with my face and hair, and it was such a treat to get to experiment with products I otherwise wouldn't have tried! Pretty Girly Things: Fall Fashion

So I don't know about the rest of the country, but here in the Twin Cities we're starting to feel a chill in the air in the mornings. Check out this forecast!

Aaaaand now that I've yet again obsessed over the weather, here's my point: With the change in the season starting to feel a bit more tangible, I'm getting the all-too-familiar urge to get my shop on. These days, it's more window-shopping than actually purchasing, but I have splurged on a few fun new additions to my closet for fall!

Recent stock-ups have included a new chambray and a cute, French graphic tee from J.Crew Factory...a beautiful ballerina-pink sweater and two pairs of oh-so-girly flats from Banana Republic...and a fantastic, fun but work-appropriate shirtdress from Anthropologie. I'm also experimenting with ankle boots, but can't find my pair online!

This is pretty indicative of what my mood this fall is leaning toward: cozy, feminine, updated classics-with-a-twist. It gets cold fast in Minnesota, but that's never stopped me from wearing skirts (including during our -40 degree polar vortex...thank god for wool tights and leggings!). If I had a closet the size of my future apartment and a wallet the size of a bank vault, here's what else would be in my shopping cart this fall:

Pretty shirtdresses.

Anthropologie has mastered these, and Banana Republic's has a few on sale that aren't half-bad either. For weekend wear and layering, this pretty red Madewell offering also caught my eye--bonus: it's on sale!

Ankle boots.

1. Gap. 2. J.Crew. 3. Steve Madden. 4. Toms via Nordstrom.

I've never been one to veer too far from my "Topsiders, ballet flats, and one pair of brown riding boots" rotation, but I've really found myself drawn to the silhouette of ankle boots lately. The two tougher, more casual pairs would be great for weekends, while I could definitely justify the pairs with heels for the office (with tights and a shirtdress, perhaps?!).

A great cocktail dress.

Friends Andrew and Alyssa are getting married at Notre Dame this October, and as a reader in their ceremony, I get to attend the rehearsal as well as the actual wedding! I have my dress for Saturday, a girly, fit-and-flare lace-and-silk dream of a dress, but think these more structured, autumnal cocktail dresses would be perfect for the rehearsal...

Cozy pullover sweaters.

I am the sweater queeeeeeeen. I have an entire dresser devoted to them. It would really be overkill, if I didn't genuinely wear all of them to death.

Scarves galore.

What better way to jazz up a basic sweater-jeans-flats ensemble than with one of these beauties? My scarf collection is super-ready for a refresh.

Any Anthropologie floral top.

All images Anthropologie. Duh.

These are so great because, styled right, they're three-season tops. Not to mention every single one is just stunning. Sign me up...

Now off to go water my orchard full of money trees, wheeeee!..........

Lately I'm Loving

Things making me smile/on my mind/causing distraction these days:

-The DIY "messy French twist." I've had this pin sitting on my (so-totally-aspirational-and-unrealistic) hairstyle Pinterest board for months, and finally attempted it this morning with day-old hair, a lot of Dove volumizing dry shampoo (it's lifechanging I tell you!), a little patience and a lot of I-don't-give-a-damn. It only took six bobby pins and it held up all day...which may or may not be due to the insane amount of care I took to NOT touch my head every 30 seconds and marvel at my amazing hair skillzzz.

The original/my attempt. I have clothes on, so clearly I didn't replicate exaaaactly...

-Twin Cities girls: who's heard of the Garden of Eden? Not the sweet real estate in Genesis, the precious little shop on Grand Avenue in St. Paul. It sits right across from the J.Crew, which naturally means I...just pass through...the neighborhood way more than necessary. They sell a ton of great bath and body products from really reputable brands, but I have a particular love for the custom scent-blending bar they have. There are dozens of different essential oils to choose from, and a customer can pick one or pair several to create a custom fragrance. One of my all-time favorite combos: grapefruit and pink jasmine, which I just switched over to in hopes of speeding along spring. It's lovely and really affordable! Check it out!

-Target's patio furniture is out and making my heart go pitter-patter all over the place. As if that store wasn't tempting or dangerous enough on a regular basis, Jon and I have this great, giant and semi-private patio at our apartment that's just begging to be turned into a fabulous outdoor entertaining space. I'm scoping out this set in a neutral color, and dreaming of jazzing up the space with some fun throw pillows, oversized lanterns, a couple potted plants, and a to-die-for ottoman (for real, this is the cutest thing ever). Spring, come quick!

-Another Pinterest find: this whole smoothie thing is all the rage but I have some kind of a mental block that keeps me from finding any of the green smoothies swallow-able, let alone appetizing. With a tender and sore ankle holding me back a bit (a lot) at the gym, I'm trying to focus on eating extra-mindfully, and a smoothie sounds light and refreshing. This "pink" smoothie is a nice change-up from the green ones and looks super-easy...I have everything but the almond milk in my fridge already.

-I love internet quizzes. Who doesn't? With Buzzfeed blowing up my Facebook every day, I've found myself spending a lot of time finding out what 90's boy band member is my soulmate, what sandwich embodies my personality, and which Full House character I should be. For those craving something a little more cerebral, though, I stumbled on this Positivity Ratio quiz. Sounds like it's meant to accompany a book, but I've been taking it toward the end of every day for a couple days now and I think it's really interesting...if not quite as fun as "Which Rapper Are You!"
